Moving home is a big step and stressful process! But it’s also the perfect chance to focus on what truly matters: the things you love, use, and need! Here’s how to make the process smoother, save money, and turn this task into a rewarding journey.

  1. Start Early and Take Your Time

Decluttering is less overwhelming when you plan ahead. Ideally, start before putting your home on the market so you can work methodically without tight deadlines. Begin with small steps and give yourself time to make thoughtful decisions – but don’t be afraid to be ruthless when needed!

  1. Get the Family Involved

If your home has been the family hub for years, it may be storing more than just your memories! Ask your children, those that may have already flown the nest or your older children 7+ years old,  to sort through their belongings. Whether it’s memorabilia, toys, books, or furniture, give them a deadline to decide what they want to keep. This helps clear space while giving everyone ownership of the process.

  1. Measure Your New Space

Once you’ve chosen your new home, use its floor plan to figure out what furniture and belongings can realistically fit. Consider whether you’ll need certain pieces or if they suit your new home’s style. Tools like floor-planning apps can help you visualise the space. If furniture doesn’t fit, offer it to family or friends, sell it online, or donate it to charity. Schedule pickups well in advance of moving day!

  1. Declutter Room by Room

Taking on an entire house can feel overwhelming, so tackle one room at a time. Start with non-emotional items like kitchenware or linens. Use these categories to guide your decisions: Keep, Donate, Sell, Remove. This step-by-step approach keeps the process manageable.

  1. Be Ruthless when Reducing!

Moving home is a perfect opportunity to reduce the clutter! Apply this mindset across all categories: clothes, books, decor, and even food. Keep only your favourites and what you regularly use. In the kitchen, clear out expired items and avoid stockpiling groceries before the move. In other areas, let go of duplicates – how many sets of towels or plates do you really need?

  1. Handle Sentimental Items Thoughtfully

When it comes to sentimental belongings, less is more. Invest in sturdy, clear storage boxes to protect precious items like photos and keepsakes. Label these boxes carefully and set a limit on how much you’ll store. This way, you keep only the most meaningful items without creating clutter.

  1. Tidy Up Your Paperwork

Old paperwork has a way of piling up. Sort through and shred anything outdated, and pack important documents separately so they’re easy to access during your move. Transport these personally or entrust them to a friend for safekeeping.

  1. Don’t Overlook Outdoor Areas

Garages, lofts, and outbuildings are clutter magnets. Be thorough when decluttering these spaces, keeping in mind how much storage your new home has. Donate, sell, or recycle items you no longer need. For large cleanups, consider renting a skip or making a trip to the recycling centre.

  1. Take Care of Yourself During the Process

Decluttering can be emotional, especially when saying goodbye to a family home. Take breaks, stay hydrated, and eat well. Reflect on the wonderful memories your current home holds while staying focused on the exciting opportunities your new home will bring.

  1. Moving Forward

Decluttering when moving home isn’t just about letting go – it’s about making space for new beginnings. By focusing on what you truly love and need, you’ll create a home filled with joy and practicality. Remember: the less you bring, the less you’ll have to unpack. This is your chance to embrace a simpler, lighter, and more intentional way of living.
