Here’s my Christmas Decluttering and Organising Checklist tailored for the holiday season, designed to make your spaces festive-ready:
🎄 Christmas Decluttering & Organising Checklist 🎁
1. Plan Your Decluttering Session
- Pick a Day: Choose a dedicated day for decluttering and organising.
- Gather Supplies: Rubbish bags, donation boxes, storage containers, labels, and cleaning tools.
- Set Goals: Decide on focus areas—playroom, wardrobe, kitchen, or general living spaces. PRO Tip: Work in one specific area or a room at a time. Break it down into small manageable chunks to prevent decision fatigue and overwhelm. Go for easy wins; Clearing away visible rubbish and removing items that shouldn’t be in that space or room.
2. Declutter Room by Room
Playroom or Kids’ Spaces
- Sort through toys, books, and games:
- Keep: Favourites and frequently used items.
- Donate: Gently used toys your children have outgrown.
- Discard/Recycle: Broken or incomplete items.
- Organise holiday crafts and supplies in clear, labelled containers.
- Use storage solutions like IKEA Trofast units or bins for categorising toys https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/trofast-storage-combination-with-boxes-white-white-s69228473/
Dressers and Wardrobes
- Remove outgrown or unused clothing.
- Donate/Sell items in good condition on Vinted, EBay or give to your local charity.
- Group similar clothing items (e.g., jackets, winter wear).
Kitchen and Pantry
- Check expiration dates on food items.
- Clear counter space for holiday cooking and baking.
- Organise baking essentials, spices, and festive serving ware.
Living Room or Common Areas
- Declutter surfaces; coffee tables and shelves.
- Store away non-seasonal decor to make space for Christmas decorations.
- Create a dedicated space for incoming gifts (hidden of course – away from little prying eyes!)
3. Organise and Optimise
- Categorise Items: Group items by use or type.
- Maximise Storage: Use stackable bins, baskets, and drawer dividers.
- Label Everything: Clearly mark containers for toys, decorations, or seasonal accessories.
- Rotate Decor: Store non-seasonal items to focus on Christmas decor. My favourite storage boxes are from https://www.reallyusefulproducts.co.uk/uk/html/onlineshop/fullrange_rub.php I recommend the 42 L, 64L and 83L sized boxes.
4. Prepare for the Holidays
- Create a designated space for new gifts.
- Set up a wrapping station with all essentials in one spot.
- Organise holiday cards and gifts for easy access.
5. Donate and Dispose
- Take donation boxes to charity promptly.
- Recycle or discard unwanted items responsibly.
- Celebrate your refreshed and organised space!
You’ve got this! Friendly reminder: Done is perfect than perfect! Happy Christmas!
